US OPEN 2011: Maria Sharapova weathers storm at sunny Open

Maria Sharapova of Russia hits a return to Heather Watson of Britain during their match at the U.S. Open

NEW YORK, USA- Maria Sharapova survived an early scare at the U.S. Open Monday after Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova had been knocked out of the year's final grand slam, which began on time and in perfect conditions after a week of wild weather in New York.

It was business as usual at the National Tennis Center in Queens as the earthquake that rattled the U.S. East Coast last week and the deadly hurricane that killed at least 21 people were momentarily forgotten.

"On Tuesday we had an earthquake. Who knew we lived near a fault? Luckily it wasn't a double fault," New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg quipped.

Jon Vegosen, the chairman of the U.S. Tennis Association, chipped in: "Small things like earthquakes and hurricanes aren't going to stop us. The Open is now open!" he said.

Thousands of spectators streamed through the gates at Flushing Meadows on a glorious summer day, while players holed out for most of the weekend in Manhattan hotels bounded on to the courts to weather their own storms.

As a former champion and a sweetheart of the New York crowds, Sharapova was given the honor of being one of the first players on Arthur Ashe center court and, as expected, the Russian made it through to the next round.

But her 3-6 7-5 6-3 win over British teen-ager Heather Watson was an unconvincing performance from the former world number one, who won last week's lead-up event in Cincinnati.

Watson won the junior title two years ago and was making her first appearance in the senior draw but she was able to frustrate and torment the more experienced Sharapova for more than two and a half hours before she finally succumbed.

"I knew that I wasn't playing my best tennis," Sharapova said. "The best thing about this match is I gave myself a chance to play another one."

Czech Kvitova, the fifth seed, left the Louis Armstrong court almost sobbing after falling 7-6 6-3 to unseeded Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru.

Kvitova has been a marked woman since her surprising win at Wimbledon in July but this time she was the architect of her own downfall, making a whopping 52 unforced errors.

Her early exit has further opened up a women's draw which was already looming as one of the most unpredictable in years.

Kim Clijsters, the champion in each of the past two years, is missing because of injury and there are plenty of unanswered questions about the older brigade.

Sharapova has not won a grand slam since 2008. Serena Williams is back at the U.S. Open for the first time in two years and her older sister Venus is not seeded.

But they have been installed as favorites, mostly because younger rivals have yet to win a grand slam, including current world number one Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva, the number two from Russia.

BRIGHT START

Zvonareva was a finalist at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year and made a bright start, thumping Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France 6-3 6-0.

Venus beat Vesna Dolonts of Russia 6-4 6-3 in the first of the two night matches.

Switzerland's five-time champion Roger Federer, the third seed, easily won his first round match against Colombia's Santiago Giraldo 6-4 6-3 6-2. Federer's win was his 224th in grand slams, moving him to equal second with Andre Agassi. Jimmy Connors holds the all-time record for men with 233 wins, a record Federer should pass next year. "I think it's a great record to have but I'm happy I'm winning a lot on the biggest stages," Federer said. "It's just another way of saying, 'Roger, you've been doing many things right throughout your career.'"

Day 2 - Rafael Nadal (ESP) [2] vs. Andrey Golubev (KAZ)

Rafael Nadal

Spain

Andrey Golubev

Kazakhstan

Head-to-head

This will surprisingly be the first meeting between Nadal and Golubev considering that Golubev has been a regular on the main ATP Tour since 2008 and plays plenty of clay court tournaments. Despite not playing him, in all likelihood Nadal will go into this match knowing plenty about his opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. While he’s never played Nadal, Golubev has recently played a Top 5 player on hard courts. Unfortunately for his chances here, in that match he got blown away by Novak Djokovic 6-0, 6-4 in Indian Wells. At the time, Djokovic was ranked No. 3.

Will win if...

Nadal burned the fingers of his right hand at a Japanese restaurant two weeks ago during a tournament in Cincinnati. Nadal has said that injury has healed, and if that is the case, Nadal should have no trouble in moving into the second round. Golubev will have to play a near flawless match, and hope that Nadal’s game and focus aren't up to his usual standards. Not likely, particular at a Grand Slam.

Heading in.

Since losing to Novak Djokovic in the finals of Wimbledon, Nadal has been in a relative slump. In his only two tournaments since, he lost to Mardy Fish in the quarters of Cincinnati, and to unheralded Ivan Dodig in the second round of Montreal. Golubev had a decent summer on hard courts in 2011. He beat No. 14-ranked Stanislas Wawinka to reach the second round of Cincinnati, then reached the second round of Winston-Salem as well.

Look out for...

Nadal hasn’t won a tournament since taking the French Open in May, failing to win a title in his last four events. He will likely be very hungry in this event to add to his three titles in 2011. Going into this match Golubev has plenty of motivation of his own. Over a quarter of his ranking points come from his performance in last September’s ATP event in Kuala Lumpur. With those ranking points due to expire at the end of September of 2011, he’s going to need to accumulate points in a hurry to keep from free-falling out of the top 150.

Know this stat

Nadal has won 46 Career titles to Golubev’s one. Golubev has just a 6-24 match record in 2011 vs. Nadal’s 53-10.

X-factor

One of Nadal’s great strengths is keeping things in perspective. He seems to feel little pressure as the defending champion. “Pressure? I don’t feel pressure,” he said before the tournament. “I am happy about how I did. I didn’t play very well during the summer, but I am practicing much better here. So, we’ll see." Golubev has a relaxed demeanor on court. He has nothing to lose against Nadal, so certainly in this match if there were any pressure it is squarely on Nadal’s shoulders. This should help Golubev.

ROGERS CUP 2011 TORONTO: Francesca Schiavone won easily 6-1, 6-3 to Ekaterina Makarova in the beginning of Rogers Cup’s third day

TORONTO, by Juan Carlos Cordero, UNO International News Service. When everyone expected French Open champion and Chinese superstar Li Na, her opponent and country mate Shuai Peng had to retire: “I have a hip injury, I think I got it last week in San Diego. And then it is my left hip, the joint. I really tried to play yesterday, and then after I feel was not really well. Today, I did have singles, doubles, but the doctor, the trainer, said it maybe a better idea to get rest, I am not really supposed to play and I have to withdraw”.

Last night, it was the withdraw turn for Belgium Kim Clijsters, when she was winning Chinese Jie Zheng 6-3 and 2-1 in the second set. A stomach muscle tear did not allow the spectator pleasure to watch one of the strongest women in the WTA Tour, maybe for the last time (she is thinking of retirement after the 2012 Olympics or US Open next year. “During my warm up before the match, I just felt my left stomach muscle really, really tight, and when I started serving it just gradually got worse. So before the match, I got taped to try and protect the muscle as much as possible so that I wouldn’t make it worse. And during the match, it went worse and worse. Starts with the serve and then gradually, just doing rotations with my body, upper body kind of upwards, started hurting as well. So I already had an ultrasound here on-site and I have a partial tear in my left stomach muscle, a little bit of blood”.

- Kim, what does mean for the US Open? Have you ruled that out?

- “K.C.: “No, not yet. Obviously, I still have a few weeks until then, so we’ll try to do everything to be ready for the US Open. Would I play in Cincinnati? I will have a lot of treatment the next few days, do more tests, and I will just take it one day at a time”.

So, this Wednesday Francesca Schiavone took Centre Court instead of Li Na – Shuai Peng and won easily 6-1, 6-3 to Ekaterina Makarova in the beginning of Rogers Cup’s third day, in 1 hour and 1 minute. The Russian tried hard in the last games of the second set, but the Italian power was completely overwhelming for Makarova.

In the Grandstand court, Wimbledon champion 2011, Czech Petra Kvitova has to work hard, especially in the first set (7-6), to defeat Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, winning the tie break, and then dominated the second set until rain delay was called and stopped temporarily 4-2 and 40-0 in her serve. Another country mate, Czech Lucie Safarova was also winning young Rumanian sensation Simona Halep (who early upset Kutnetzsova) 6-2 and 5-4.

In Montreal, Canadian rookie Vasek Pospisil was having a tied first set, 5-5 partial, against the best player ever, Swiss Roger Federer. But at the end, the former No.1 prevailed 7-5 in the 1st.

Even tough Serena Williams defeated easily Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko by 6-0, 6-3 last night and everyone expect that her Wednesday rival, Germany Julia Goerges, will suffer the same fate, the American wasn’t in the mood for smile or happy feelings last night:

- Serena, you talked about it last week or couple weeks ago when you won, you said it tonight, that you’re appreciating the game more; every match is so much fun. But you’re still not smiling an awful lot out there. How much fun is it? How much is still very, very serious?

- S.W.: “Well, it’s obviously really serious. I don’t know too many people that are smiling and winning. You know, I smile a lot off the court. I figure if I take a day and if I could try to be serious for a maximum of 3 or 4 hours, then, you know, I should be good. Sometimes when I smile too much, the you can lose focus”

Number one, Dane Caroline Wozniacki will start defending the Roger Cup title soon, after the rain stops, in a match with Italy's Roberta Vinci, who advanced to the second round with a solid 6-2, 6-2 victory over world No. 19 Yanina Wickmayer, but Wozniacki is a different kind of opponent, strong and more balanced, qualities that have her in top of WTA ranking for the whole year, even without winning a Grand Slam yet.

WTA TENNIS: STRONG IS BEAUTIFUL combines athleticism and grace in new WTA Ad Campaign

STRONG IS BEAUTIFUL, WTA New Ad Campaign

The WTA unveiled a new global ad campaign with the tagline "Strong is Beautiful", featuring 38 current and next generation stars of the sport. The campaign includes TV, print and digital ads along with social media applications and will be unveiled across 80 markets over the next two years.

Drawing upon athleticism and grace - a unique combination that has turned the stars of the WTA into the most recognizable and followed female athletes on the planet - the campaign places the personal stories, pressures and dreams of the players front of stage. The creative is designed to support the WTA's efforts to establish a deeper engagement with fans around the world and to promote both the sport's next generation of players along with current established names.

In addition to a WTA driven media campaign to promote women's tennis and the WTA Championships in Istanbul, the advertising is expected to be utilized by WTA events around the world, establishing a unified promotional message.

Famed Los Angeles photographer and filmmaker Dewey Nicks, who produced a series of stunning videos and photos of a select group of WTA players last fall for the cover feature of the New York Times magazine, formed the inspiration for the ad creative and shot the campaign. World class advertising agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners produced the campaign and developed its iconic tagline.

"We want to develop a closer relationship with our fans and attract a new generation of fans to women's tennis, and the Strong is Beautiful campaign is one way to get it done. This campaign will serve as a creative marketing platform for our players, tournaments, year-end WTA Championships and the entire sport," said Stacey Allaster, Chairman & CEO of the WTA. "The personal stories are inspirational. The unique combination of athleticism, strength and determination on the court and success, interests and inner beauty off the court is what makes women's tennis so attractive to millions around the world."

"It takes so many elements to reach the top of such a competitive sport as tennis - strength of character, discipline and willpower. All of these things define who we are as people and as athletes. For me the new campaign captures the inner strength of players in a beautiful way," Caroline Wozniacki said.

"Strong is Beautiful was an extraordinary project and I was incredibly impressed with these athletes that embody all of the characteristics of physical and mental strength," Nicks said. "The raw emotion that spoke from the heart of the players really inspired me and I am thrilled to have been able to portray these amazing women in a beautiful way that I believe fans have not seen before."

The set of 30-second television and digital ads focuses on women's tennis stars' lives and the intense and sometimes difficult social undercurrents of realizing their dreams as professional athletes. The campaign's overall focus is on the global nature of women's tennis and reveals unique and heartfelt storylines that include Serbia's Ana Ivanovic having to practice in a war-torn Belgrade; Chinese star Li Na having the pressure and hope of 1.3 billion Chinese people on her shoulders; and Belgium's Kim Clijsters being torn about giving her all to tennis while raising a young daughter. Serena Williams' ubiquitous self-confidence comes through while assuring the viewer that the only reason she brings seven tennis outfits to each Grand Slam is because she intends on wearing them all, for each match she plans on winning.

The end result is a celebration of strong women from all corners of the world. Through all of life's difficult circumstances, the players' love for the sport and determination to succeed prevails. The new ad campaign is a life example that being physically and mentally strong is beautiful.

The TV, print and digital elements of the campaign will begin to run globally later this month, culminating at the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul.

Viewers and fans can continue the conversation with the WTA players through social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and a series of Chinese social media networks where the WTA serves up daily in-depth exclusive content from 53 tournaments in 33 countries to more than 17 million fans.

The ad campaign follows on the heels of an 18-month momentous period during which the WTA relaunched its brand and signed with three new major sponsors - leading European cosmetics brand Oriflame, Chinese apparel company Peak and Jetstar, a subsidiary of Qantas airlines. WTA also renewed lead global partner Sony Ericsson, and resigned and significantly upgraded its partnership with USANA, a leading global vitamin and health supplement manufacturer.
