The body of a Canadian woman who died on Mount Everest has been brought most of the way down the mountain by sherpas and can now be reached by helicopter.
The body of Shriya Shah-Klorfine, 33, is reported to be at Camp 2, and will be flown to Kathmandu, Nepal, as soon as weather permits. The Ontario woman was one of several people who died from altitude sickness and exhaustion while descending from the summit May 19 in what has been described as overcrowded conditions.
Five climbers “worked very, very hard” for 20 hours to bring the body to Camp 2, Ganesh Thakuri told the Toronto Star in a phone interview.
One helicopter was sent to Camp 2 a few hours ago, but had to return because of bad weather, said Thakuri, the managing director of Utmost Adventure Trekking.
If the weather improves, another helicopter was expected to leave Monday or Tuesday.
