It is terrible and painful the chaotic scenes what you see in all the country, with more than 2,000,000 families affected, 1,500,000 houses and apartments with severe damage, building and hospital partially or totally destroyed, and the highways with deep pitfalls that can open and close with everything that it passing at that moment.
Even our families in safe parts of Chilean capital Santiago are without power, phones, or the regular food, sleeping on the living room because the more than 100 aftermath. 6.3 Richter, one of the last quake and fearing a new tsunami! We have been able to reach them by Skype only because a neighbor has a power line available and passed an extension to power the computer, but not lights or other electrical appliances. Last night, it was really dramatic communication, with my sister Jacqueline, my mother Laura and my nephew Hector Alejandro, sleeping on the ground. We lived this one before in the 8.5 Richter magnitude quake of March 1985, when our buildings collapsed and lived for a month on the streets, small camps and one-room woodhouse of a friend for a year.
Now, Chilean government authorities are recognizing that death toll will rise when people dead and disappeared with the tsunami in the south part of the country and island such as Juan Fernandez Island, can be counted. Certainly, this quake was 900 times worse than Haiti but death toll doesn’t seem to count to that level, however crooked builders have make the matter worse with new buildings collapsing because faulty materials and Government did not react on time for the tsunami, everyone saying that the Chilean emergency office and the Army are responsible for some of the victims of the tsunami and those that cannot been accounted. If you saw the ships right on the middle of market square and City hall in Talcahuano, when people saved themselves running to the mountains and hills, you will understand the situation. Check on TVN online, a TV Channel where I used to be a producer and journalist, the images speaks for themselves, and something has to be done faster.
Solidarity is a must for all of us Chilean and relatives living overseas, more than 2,000,000 million of us. If you think of the aftermath only with 100 and plus, and still going replicas, you know that we need to organized ourselves in our main countries of immigration, talk to the people, to our friends, to the local, provincial government, and do something. You can see from here that emergency support and help in Chile has been slow, it is not a critic but detached from here, we can see those no coordination between government, armed forces, police and people. Loathing for food, it cannot happen. This is not the jungle or the survival of the fittest, we Chilean are human being, that have a long history of being compassionate and show solidarity. However, when you witness the slowness to ask for international help, you know what I mean.
Then, put the hand in your heart and even if you don’t have organizing skills, do something, our families are suffering and they will have that for more than a year of re-building the country. Normality is not a truth, right now, and copper mines halted the production and will cause also an international copper reserves crisis
