Hayes doubled the lead five minutes into the second half, heading in a cross from Kealia Ohai, and made it 3-0 in the 74th with a right-footed shot from just outside the box. Hayes completed her hat trick two minutes into injury time when she chipped goalkeeper Patricia Mantey to score her 15th goal in international play. "It's always exciting to come into an atmosphere like this," Hayes said. "It was great to get three goals. "But I couldn't have done it without the help of my teammates. This team brings out the best in me." The United States, one of the tournament favorites, is looking to build on the success of its senior women's team, which won the gold medal at the London Olympics. "We came away with the result we wanted today and I couldn't be happier for Maya," American coach Steve Swanson said. "She has worked very hard and showed the explosiveness she has." The Americans, who won this tournament in 2002 and 2008, will next play China on Aug. 23 before wrapping up group play against defending champion Germany on Aug. 27 in Miyagi. Canada had its final training session prior to its opening match of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Japan 2012 on Sunday 19 August. Canadian U-20 coach Andrew Olivieri’s squad is opening the competition against Argentina on Monday 20 August (19.00 local / 06.00 ET / 03.00 PT).
“We are as prepared as can be and will put in the best performance,” said Olivieri. “We have a group of players that work well together and are prepared and inspired to go out strong. Our goal is to come out of our group.”
Canada will face Argentina, Norway and Korea DPR in the group phase, sides presenting very different strengths and challenges. Canada's first two matches on 20 August (Argentina) and 23 August (Norway) are in Kobe while Canada's third group match on 27 August is in Saitama.

Canada qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Japan 2012 in March of this year. The team won a silver medal at the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship in Panama. The current program features players born 1992 or earlier.
This year will mark Canada's fifth participation at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Canada won FIFA silver at the inaugural event at Canada 2002, but has also won CONCACAF gold in qualifying tournaments in 2004 and 2008. After 2012, the next FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup will take place in Canada in 2014.

The 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup begins this weekend in Japan. The tournament features the next generation of international women’s soccer stars. Expect some of the Canadian players to move on to the senior national team before the 2015 World Cup here in Canada. The Canadian team qualified by finishing 2nd in CONCACAF qualifying, losing to the United States in the final. Canada plays in Group D with North Korea, Norway and Argentina.
