Frank Dancevic has had better days in the Rogers Cup.
Only five years ago, he reached the quarter-finals.
But Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan defeated Dancevic 6-3, 7-5 in a first-round Rogers Cup match on Tuesday.
Kukushkin, 24, ranked 69th in the world, will play Richard Gasquet of France in the next round.
Dancevic, 27, a native of Niagara Falls, Ont., is trying to resurrect a career that had him ranked 65th in the world at one stage. He entered the Rogers Cup as a wild card ranked 123rd.
Back injuries stalled his career at various times.
“I’ve had a pretty rough year this year battling injuries and stuff,” he said after Tuesday’s match. “My confidence this year started getting better last week. I started playing really well and I made the semifinals in Vancouver.”
As well as Dancevic played last week, he found he was struggling on Tuesday.
“Arriving here late and adjusting, I found it a little difficult and I felt like I was struggling out there today finding my timing,” he said.
After dropping the first set, he was in the second set until Kukushkin broke his service to go ahead 6-5. He then put the match away in his own serve.
“Physically I feel good,” Dancevic said. “My back is good, knock on wood. The last three tournaments I’ve played I haven’t felt any pain or anything serious, so that’s a good thing. I’m happy to be playing.”
Things weren’t so good this year before that.
“When I was playing well, I was winning a lot of matches in a short period of time. I felt like my confidence just skyrocketed,” he said. “Then, bam, I was out three months. It happened so suddenly. I just, like, popped ligaments and I was out. It kind of scared me.
“Coming back and starting to train again was really difficult. I found that just practising going out for the first couple of weeks, I was very tentative, very afraid of what was going to happen if I would get hurt again and be out again.”
Dancevic said he is starting to get more and more confidence when it comes to his back.
“Hopefully I can get some matches together. I need to win a lot of matches in a row, like get a few tournaments where I can put two, three, four matches together to get that match confidence back.”
In an afternoon match, Juan Monaco of Argentina defeated Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver 7-5, 6-4.
It was a quick turnaround for Pospisil, too quick for the 22-year-old.
After needing a third-set tiebreaker Monday night to dispose of Italy’s Andreas Seppi in his first-round match of the Rogers Cup, he had to come back Tuesday afternoon to face Monaco.
Pospisil didn’t feel right heading into the match.
“I didn’t feel very good on the court today both mentally and physically,” said Pospisil. “Last night was very draining. I didn’t have very much time to recover.”
The 28-year-old Monaco is rated 10th in the world and Pospisil is ranked 104th.
Pospisil, who has been ranked as high as 85th in the world this year, competed last week in the Olympics.
“I was extremely sore when I woke up today,” said Pospisil. “I tried to recover last night as much as I could. I must have done something worse because usually I’m able to get into the match even if I’m sore. After a couple of games my body loosens up but today that wasn’t the case at all. I don’t know if I pulled some muscles but my left side was feeling pretty bad. I kept trying to go through it but it wasn’t feeling any better. If anything, it was feeling worse as the match wore on.”
